I SAW THE MACHINERY.

And I became fascinated by the places where society comes apart.

THE ORIGIN GADFLY JOURNAL

I became fascinated by the places where society comes apart.

Not merely the arguments themselves, but the machinery beneath them.

The histories people inherit without knowing they inherited them. The institutions that shape what is possible. The stories we tell about ourselves. The interests that collide beneath what appears to be a simple disagreement. The old wounds that reappear wearing new colors.

I began to notice that the fiercest arguments rarely begin where people said they began.

A political dispute had a history. A cultural conflict had a history. A social division had a history.

Even the things that appeared entirely new often carried the fingerprints of something from decades, centuries, generations before.

And yet we were constantly being asked to understand the present without examining the machinery that produced it.

That bothered me.

There were too many things worth examining.

So I built a place for examination.

Gadfly Journal.

A publication dedicated to looking beneath the event, beneath the headline, beneath the argument, and beneath the assumptions that make an argument possible.

We examine history because the present did not arrive alone.

We examine current events because history is still happening.

We examine arguments because disagreement is more useful when we understand what the disagreement actually is.

And we examine both sides because a reader deserves more than a conclusion handed down from above.

The purpose is not to tell you what to think.

The purpose is to give you something worth thinking about.

THE CONSTITUTION
OF THE GADFLY

We hereby declare.

I
ARTICLE I

NOTHING EXISTS IN ISOLATION.

Every event has a cause.

Every cause has a history.

Every history contains competing accounts.

Therefore no event shall be examined without asking what came before it.

II
ARTICLE II

THE HEADLINE IS NOT THE STORY.

The headline is a doorway, not a destination.

We reject the assumption that the first explanation is the complete explanation.

We will pursue the context beneath the event and the history beneath the context.

III
ARTICLE III

EVERY ARGUMENT SHALL BE EXAMINED ON ITS OWN TERMS.

We shall not construct a weak version of an opposing argument merely to defeat it.

We shall seek the strongest reasonable case for each position.

We shall distinguish evidence from assertion, interpretation from fact, and disagreement from dishonesty.

We shall examine what each argument explains.

We shall examine what each argument fails to explain.

Understanding an argument is not an obligation to accept it.

IV
ARTICLE IV

THE READER SHALL REMAIN SOVEREIGN.

Gadfly shall investigate.

Gadfly shall question.

Gadfly shall present evidence.

Gadfly shall make arguments where appropriate.

But Gadfly shall not demand intellectual obedience.

The reader is permitted to disagree.

The reader is permitted to remain uncertain.

The reader is permitted to change their mind.

No conclusion is sacred merely because it is ours.

THEREFORE, WE ASK.

Why did this happen?

Why now?

Why here?

Why do we remember this but forget that?

Why does one explanation survive while another disappears?

Why do reasonable people reach radically different conclusions from the same world?

What are we missing?

What came before?

What comes next?

And what happens when we look again?

LOOK AGAIN.
